site.btaTourism Minister: 2022 Tourism Better Than in 2021 but Still Short of 2019 Levels

Tourism in 2022 is doing better than in 2021, but is still under the pre-pandemic level in 2019, caretaker Tourism Minister Ilin Dimitrov told reporters in the seaside city of Bourgas where he is to attend a meeting of the local administration and tourism representatives from the Southern Black Sea coast.

Dimitrov spoke about "a stable number" of Bulgarians choosing to spend their holiday in this country. A small drop is reported in the number of Bulgarian holiday makers compared to 2021.

Holidays by Bulgarians abroad are growing, with more than 3.5 million trips.

Dimitrov said that the number of charter flights exceeded by nearly 70% the early estimates for the season.

A little over 50,000 Russian tourists came to Bulgaria since the start of the year to date. Most of them own properties here.

Dimitrov said that more than 7,500 Ukrainians have been appointed at various jobs in Bulgaria. Some work in seaside resorts, others in facilities inside the country.

Approached to comment whether there is still unpaid money to hotel owners for accommodation of Ukrainians, Dimitrov said that a big portion of such outstanding payments will be paid shortly, and that this is a priority of the Ministry.
