site.btaSliven to Host 16th Edition of National Animal Husbandry Fair
The 16th edition of the Sliven national animal husbandry fair will be held on September 16 and 17 in the exhibition area next to the village of Mechkarevo (Southeastern Bulgaria), said the Executive Agency for Selection and Reproduction in Animal Breeding. It is organizing the event together with the Ministry of Agriculture and State Fund Agriculture.
A total of 550 elite Bulgarian cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and rabbits will be exhibited. Among them is the Teteven sheep, an indigenous breed typical of the Central Balkan Range, the Teteven area, and the villages of Ribaritsa, Cherni Vit, Golyam Izvor, and Galata. Its milk is used to make Bulgarian green cheese.
Also to be presented at the fair is the Lacaune sheep breed, whose milk is used in the production of Roquefort cheese, the Replyana and the Karakachan sheep breeds, whose fleece is used in the making of carpets and rugs, and the Kalofer and the Local Long-haired goat breeds, whose skin is used in the making of Kukeri dancers' traditional costumes.
Also on the fair’s programme are demonstrations of the Bulgarian Shepherd dog breed, folklore performances, presentations, tasting, and a large farmers’ market, the organizers said.
