site.btaEurostat: Average 18% Rise of Bread Price in EU, Just Under 30% in Bulgaria Y/Y
Bread, vegetables, meat - food is getting more expensive. Cooking oil prices have risen the most, but staple foods, such as bread, have also become significantly more costly. This is particularly due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has significantly disturbed global markets since Russia and Ukraine have been major exporters of grains, wheat, maize, oilseeds (particularly sunflowers) and fertilisers, the EU statistics office Eurostat published on Monday.
The average price of bread in EU countries in August, 2022 was 18% higher year on year, which is a huge increase compared with August 2021, when the price of bread was on average 3% higher than in August 2020.
Some EU countries are more affected by the rise in the price of bread than others. The biggest price increases are in Hungary (+66%), Lithuania (+33%), followed by Estonia and Slovakia, with 32% each.
Bulgaria ranks eighth in bread price increases for the year with just under 30%.
Among EU countries, bread prices rose the least in France (+8%), followed by the Netherlands and Luxembourg, where prices rose by 10% each.
