In 2020, Bulgaria allocated BGN 21,924.4 million for welfare benefits, the National Statistical Institute said. A total og BGN 11,142.3 million from the state budget was spent on financing social protection in the country, and income from social security contributions amounted to BGN 13,578.4 million.

In 2020, the social protection benefits paid out, sorted by function, were: ilness/healthcare (BGN 6,587.9 million); disability (BGN 1,864.6 million); age/old age (BGN 9,289.0 million); heirs (BGN 1,087.3 million); family/children (BGN 1,974.8 million); unemployment (BGN 821.3 million); housing needs (BGN 0.57 million); other social exclusion, not classified elsewhere (BGN 298.9 million).

The highest relative share in social protection benefits in 2020 was occupied by expenses under the old age function (42.4%) with the main component "pension expenses", followed by expenses under the illness/healthcare function (30%) and family/children (9%).
