Between January and August 2022, Bulgarian exports of goods increased by 42% compared to the same period in 2021, according to a Eurostat report published on Friday. Domestic exports accounted for EUR 31.8 billion.

Between January and August this year, imports to Bulgaria grew by 46% y/y, reaching EUR 35.9 billion. Bulgaria saw a trade deficit of EUR 4.1 billion. In trade with EU Member States, Bulgaria registered a surplus of EUR 1.5 billion.

The exports of goods from the EU in August compared to the same month last year rose by 24.2% from EUR 166.7 billion to EUR 207.1 billion. Imports into the EU amounted to EUR 271.8 billion - an increase of 56.4% compared to August 2021, when it amounted to EUR 173.8 billion. This means a trade deficit of EUR 64.7 billion for the EU - a significant increase compared to last year's EUR 7.1 billion. Over the same period, trade between EU Member States rose 32.3% to EUR 329.5 billion.

Annual comparison by Member States

In August 2022, compared with August 2021, all Member States registered large increases in extra-EU exports except Cyprus (-22.9%). The highest increases were registered in Slovenia (+98.1%) and Malta (+85.4%).

With regard to the extra-EU imports, all Member States registered large increases except Latvia (-21.7%), Estonia (-16.4%) and Luxembourg (-13.6%). The highest increases were observed in Croatia (+149.7%), Portugal (+93.5%) and Malta (+90.2%).
