In 2021, Bulgaria's government debt amounted to BGN 33,268 million, or 23.9% of GDP, show final data of the National Statistical Institute published on Friday. The general government institutional sector reported a deficit of BGN 5,414 million, or 3.9% of GDP.

The deficit in the central government sub-sector amounted to BGN 6,359 million, or 4.6% of GDP. The local government and the social security sub-sectors reported a surplus of BGN 136 million and BGN 810 million, respectively.
