In 2020, Bulgaria was the EU Member State with the lowest climate-related economic loss per inhabitant, EUR 0.7 (less than EUR 5 million in total), followed by Slovenia and Slovakia, both EUR 4 per inhabitant, according to estimates by the European Environmental Agency, republished by Eurostat on Monday.
At the other end of the scale, Greece lost EUR 91 per inhabitant, followed by France (EUR 62) and Ireland (EUR 42). The EU average was estimated at EUR 27.1 per inhabitant.
Extreme weather and other climate-related events have caused over EUR 145 billion in economic losses in the EU over the past decade. Climate-related economic losses have been increasing by nearly 2% annually during that period.
In 2020, the total climate-related economic losses were EUR 12 billion. The total loss peaked in 2017 at EUR 27.9 billion, more than double that in 2020, as a result of heatwaves causing drought and wildfires. The lowest total loss, EUR 3.7 billion, was observed in 2012.
