Speaking in Parliament during the discussion about Bulgaria's readiness to join the Eurozone, Deputy Prime Minister for EU Funds Management Atanas Pekanov said that Bulgaria must continue fighting to join the Eurozone on January 1, 2024 and not give up at the last moment.

According to Pekanov, the eurozone membership must become a strategic goal of Bulgaria. It comes with incredible and permanent benefits, some of which will increase investors' confidence in Bulgaria, will stimulate export, tourism, increase this country's credit ratings and lower interest rates, he said.

It would be a mistake for the Bulgarian Government to once again conduct analyses on whether the euro should be adopted. The time for analyses is over and now's the time for concrete steps, many of which, however, call for political will.

In a declaration on behalf of BSP for Bulgaria's parliamentary group, prompted by Pekanov's speech, BSP leader Korneliya Ninova said that "the central bank's Governing Council, which we elect and summoned to present a report, ridiculed the Bulgarian National Assembly and failed to produce such a report".

Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) Governor Dimitar Radev was also given a hearing in Parliament on Thursday, initiated by BSP for Bulgaria, about Bulgaria's preparedness for Eurozone membership.

Ninova said her parliamentary group is and has been in favour of the euro, but each country must decide for itself when is the right time to adopt the single currency. "The only thing we wanted today [Thursday] was to make an informed decision – it could be "yes" or it could be "no", but the central bank was supposed to tells us if the economy will suffer, if there will be growth, if people's incomes will go up or down, if there's inflation risks or not. That's what we wanted. What we got was yet another blow against parliamentarism and no answer to the specific questions raised," she said.
