Bulgaria's gross external debt totalled EUR 41,497.2 million (52.5% of GDP) at end-August 2022, growing by EUR 628.6 million (1.5%) from end-August 2021, the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) said on Friday.

Short-term liabilities equalled EUR 7,855.9 million (18.9% of the total debt, 9.9% of GDP), growing by EUR 1,547.9 million (24.5%) from end-August 2021.

Long-term liabilities totalled EUR 33,641.3 million (81.1% of the total debt, 42.6% of GDP) at end-August 2022, dropping by EUR 919.3 million (2.7%) from end-August 2021.

General government’s gross external debt equalled EUR 7,158.2 million (9.1% of GDP), dropping by EUR 1,235.7 million (14.7%) from end-August 2021.

The external liabilities of the central bank stood at EUR 2,019.8 million (2.6% of GDP), growing by EUR 145.3 million (7.8%) from end-August 2021.

The external liabilities of other monetary financial institutions totalled EUR 5,417.7 million (6.9% of GDP), increasing by over EUR 1 billion (23%) from end-August 2021.

Other sectors’ external debt equalled EUR 12,980.7 million (16.4% of GDP), growing by EUR 839.7 million (6.9%) from end-August 2021.

The stock of intercompany lending amounted to EUR 13,920.8 million (17.6% of GDP) at end-August 2022, decreasing by EUR 132.7 million (0.9%) from end-August 2021. It held the largest share in external debt, equating to 33.5% at end-August 2022, compared with 34.4% at end-August 2021.
