Cash continues to be the most preferred way of payment by Bulgarians, followed by card payments, at 67% and 54%, respectively, according to an international survey into consumer payment attitudes commissioned by EVO Payments International in partnership with Visa, in the countries in Eastern and Central Europe, whose results were released on Wednesday.
Thirty-eight per cent of the respondents said that the main reason why they choose to pay cash is the absence of an option for a digital transaction at the point of sale or of service.
Only a quarter of the Bulgarian respondents in the poll paid for their last purchase in a store with their phone, smart watch or another device. Thirty-four per cent paid cash on delivery for their last online purchase.
Stores which provide an option for digital payments are perceived positively by the Bulgarian consumers as 41% of the respondents said such stores are modern while 42% described them customer-oriented. Twenty per cent said they had to leave a grocery store upon finding it did not offer an option for payment by card. The absence of a digital payment option is most acutely felt in open-air markets and bazaars (42%), in hair-styling and beauty parlours, and barber shops (45%), in cabs (45%), at the doctor's, dentist's or physiotherapist's (35%).
