The National Customs Agency will receive new scanners and software for processing X-ray images, the Agency said in a press release Monday. Eighteen customs checkpoints will be provided with new X-ray equipment within a project funded under the Customs Control Equipment Instrument as part of the European Commission's Integrated Border Management Fund.

In early October, the Agency and the European Commission signed a grant agreement approving the project proposal of the Bulgarian customs administration. The project's implementation began in early November and will end by late March 2025. The equipment will be put to use no later than April 30, 2025.

The grant agreement will provide funding for the supply of 31 new scanning machines and an upgrade of one existing system. The new equipment for X-ray checks will be eight different types in accordance with the specifics of the freight flows at the corresponding customs checkpoint.

The project has a total budget of EUR 40,262,987 (exclusive of VAT), of which 80% will be grant funding from the European Commission.
