The terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Greek city of Alexandroupolis should be ready by the end of 2023, caretaker Energy Minister Rossen Hristov said during Question Time in Parliament on Friday. Hristov answered a question by Democratic Bulgaria MP Martin Dimitrov about measures to build the facility on time. Hristov reminded that Bulgaria holds a 20% stake in the facility via the state-owned BulgarTransGas company.
Hristov said that the financing for the construction of the facility has been ensured and the payments are being effected according to the respective schedule.
Hristov said also that a meeting in Greece has discussed the option of increasing almost twice the volume of the Greece-Bulgaria Gas Interconnector, as provided for in the project documentation. Talks are underway with the Greek operator of the facility, Desfa S. A., about when this can be done.
The aim is when the LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis is commissioned, Bulgaria to have increased capacities for gas transmission so as to receive greater volumes of gas, Hristov said.
