Bansko was named Bulgaria's Best Ski Resort 2022 in the 10th annual programme of the London-based World Ski Awards (WSA), a sister initiative of the World Travel Awards. Situated at the foot of Mt Pirin in the southwest of the country, Bansko is the biggest ski centre in the Balkans, according to information posted on the WSA website.
The other Bulgarian nominees for Best Ski Resort 2022 were Borovets, Pamporovo and Vitosha.
The website says that Bansko has 15 lifts and 75 km of groomed slopes, suitable for beginners and experts alike. The highest point of the ski centre is 2,560 metres above sea level, and the lowest, 1,000 metres. A 16 km ski road equipped with artificial snow machines and lighting connects the ski area with the town. Races from the FIS calendar for the Ski and Snowboard World Cup are regularly held in Bansko.
The mineral pools around Bansko are open all year round. In summer there are opportunities for trekking, rock climbing, horseback riding and cycling. The town annually hosts jazz, folklore, cinema, theatre, opera and pop music festivals. The high quality Bulgarian wine, the traditional cuisine, a rich nightlife and a charming old town centre make a holiday in Bansko an unforgettable experience even for those who are not into sports.
WSA also names Kempinski Hotel Grand Arena Bansko as Bulgaria's Best Ski Hotel 2022. Alpin Hotel in the Borovets resort has been distinguished as the country's Best Ski Boutique Hotel 2022. Villa Gella in the Rhodope Mountains is Bulgaria's Best Ski Chalet 2022.
