site.btaParliament Approves in Principle Four-Year Excise Duty Calendar for Cigarettes
Parliament adopted on first reading amendments to the Tax-Insurance Procedure Code, which propose a four-year excise duty schedule for cigarettes and other tobacco products.
According to the bill’s motives, this would achieve predictability in taxation and regulations and will avoid sharp increases of excise duties, as well as undesired consequences for businesses, the Exchequer and consumers. The bill’s adoption will also introduce good European practices and bring Bulgaria’s excise duty rates for tobacco products closer to the European average, which is over EUR 150 per 1,000 cigarettes, compared to Bulgaria’s EUR 90.
