A total of EUR 266 million are allocated to projects making the Danube Region more innovative, sustainable and socially responsible, under the new transnational cooperation programme for the region, said the Regional Development and Public Works Ministry on Thursday. The budget of the Interreg Danube Region Programme (2021-2027) approved by the European Commission includes 80% of EU funds and instruments and 20% national co-funding by the participating countries (nine EU Member States, including Bulgaria, and five non-EU countries).

The Danube Region Programme aims for the participating countries to cooperate in the elaboration and implementation of joint projects that would contribute to the solution of common territorial, social, and economic issues. Each project has to include partners from at least three countries. Allowed to participate are national, regional or local institutions, universities, research institutes, private companies, and NGOs.
