site.btaUPDATED Tripartite Council Debates Minimum Wage Thursday
The National Council for Tripartite Cooperation of the government, employers and unions are debating the minimum wage as of January 1, 2023, the Council of Ministers press service said Thursday. About 500,000 Bulgarians earn a minimum wage.
With a draft ordinance, the caretaker government proposes that the minimum wage be set at BGN 770 as of January 1, 2023. The proposal was published on the website of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy on December 10. The issue is also being debated in Parliament.
The agenda of the meeting also includes draft amendments to an ordinance on medical evaluation.
The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) is against the proposal of the caretaker government. The trade union says that the BGN 770 minimum wage is not 50% of the previous average wage for the country, as required by the European directive. According to CITUB, it is not fair to relate the minimum wage for 2023 to the average wage for 2021, taking two years back. This does not reflect reality - the purchasing power of people, inflation, the standard of living and other indicators that should be taken into account, CITUB said.
The Podkrepa trade union is also against this proposal. According to Vanya Grigorova, the economic adviser to the union's president, the caretaker government is sabotaging the increase of the minimum wage.
