site.btaMarket Price Index of Wholesale Food Prices Doggedly Continues Upward

The Market Price Index (MPI) of wholesale food prices in Bulgaria rose by 0.35% to a record high 2.302 points in the week beginning December 19, way beyond its historic peak of 2.222 points registered in early May this year, the Commodity Exchange and Wholesale Markets State Commission said on Sunday. In one month it rose 2% and by 11.42% in the last three months.

The baseline of 1.000 points was set in 2005.

Hothouse tomatoes price went up by 1.7% and traded at BGN 3.27 per kilo. Hothouse cucumbers remained at BGN 3.56 per kg. Red peppers gained 13.8% to BGN 3.38 per kg at the end of the week.

Potatoes increased slightly to BGN 1.25 per kg, carrots dropped to BGN 1.10 per kg, and cabbage jumped to BGN 0.92 per kg.

Apples gained 10.6% and were selling at BGN 1.36 per kg. Lemons dropped by 6.5% to BGN 2.46 per kg. Oranges lost 14.4% to BGN 1.67 per kg. The wholesale price of bananas was BGN 2.77 per kg.

The wholesale price of white brined cheese from cow's milk edged down by 1.7% to BGN 11.31 per kg. Vitosha yellow kashkaval cheese gained 0.3% and traded at BGN 18.25 per kg.

Sunflower oil dropped by 0.7% and sold at BGN 4.47 per litre this week.

Butter traded at BGN 2.89 per 125 grams. Chicken decreased by 0.7% to BGN 6.05 per kg.

Sugar was selling at BGN 2.51 per kg at the end of the week. Grade 500 flour increased by 1.4% and traded at BGN 1.42 per kg. Rice was traded at BGN 2.90 per kg.
