Bulgaria’s gross external debt amounted to EUR 43,978.2 million (55.7% of GDP) at end-October 2022, growing by EUR 2,813.4 million (6.8%) from end-October 2021 (EUR 41,164.8 million, 57.9% of GDP), the Bulgarian National Bank said in a press release Friday.

Short-term liabilities equalled EUR 8,675.9 million (19.7% of the total debt, 11% of GDP), growing by EUR 2,285.2 million (35.8%) from end-October 2021 (EUR 6,390.8 million, 15.5% of the total debt, 9% of GDP). Long-term liabilities totaled EUR 35,302.3 million (80.3% of the total debt, 44.7% of GDP) at end-October 2022, growing by EUR 528.2 million (1.5%) from end-October 2021).

At end-October 2022, 79% of gross external liabilities were denominated in EUR, compared with 81.3% at end-October 2021.

General government’s gross external debt 3 totalled EUR 8,331.9 million (10.5% of GDP), growing by EUR 121.9 million (1.5%) from end-October 2021.

The external liabilities of the central bank stood at EUR 2,149.2 million (2.7% of GDP), growing by EUR 266.8 million (14.2%) from end-October 2021. The external liabilities of other banks and money market funds totalled EUR 6,201.9 million (7.8% of GDP), increasing by EUR 1,615.1 million (35.2%) from end-October 2021.

Other sectors’ external debt equalled EUR 12,853.5 million (16.3% of GDP), growing by EUR 475.4 million (3.8%) from end-October 2021.

The stock of intercompany lending amounted to EUR 14,441.6 million (18.3% of GDP) at end-October 2022, growing by EUR 334.1 million (2.4%) from end-October 2021. It held the largest share in external debt, equating to 32.8% at end-October 2022, compared with 34.3% at end-October 2021.
