During Friday's Question Time in Parliament, caretaker Transport Minister Hristo Alexiev confirmed that at this very moment the European Commission is conducting a check into the Civil Administration Aviation (CAA) Directorate General. There are some findings but it will not come to license revoking, he added.
"I am monitoring the process. I have ordered the Director General not only to undertake an increase in the administrative capacity but also to announce a new competition for the Flight Standards Directorate. It is true that as of now, this Directorate remains without Director General," Alexiev elaborated. "Whatever problems may be found, we will make sure to resolve them duly to avoid such negative scenarios," Alexiev said.
His statement was in answer to a question by Vazrazhdane MP Nikolay Drenchev, according to whom Bulgaria has "issues with aviation security". "We are in an unprecedented situation, in which it is likely that the CAA Directorate General may have its license revoked, which allows it to organize the flight activities across Bulgarian territory. If that happens, we may be faced with the reality of a neighbouring country (Greece or Romania) to take over all Bulgarian civil aviation processes, which would be a huge blow to our country's reputation," Drenchev said.
