A meeting between the GERB-UDF parliamentary group, the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB), and the Podkrepa Labour Confederation took place here on Friday to discuss Bulgaria's commitment to close its coal-fired plants. Delyan Dobrev MP presented a draft resolution, which aims to ensure that the Bulgarian coal-fired plants will not be closed by the end of 2025.
"Before we table it, we want to discuss it, so that we can amend it to suit your views and ours," Dobrev told the unions.
The resolution stipulates that the Parliament obliges the Council of Ministers to amend the Energy section of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP). Part of the motion stipulates that the Council of Ministers, through the Deputy Prime Minister for European Funds and the Minister of Energy, shall, no later than January 31, 2023, take the necessary actions to decarbonize electricity generation by 40% by the end of 2025, taking the baseline levels from 2019.
CITUB President Plamen Dimitrov commented that the scenarios for the energy transition and the possibilities for legislative changes should be analyzed. According to Dimitrov, guaranteeing the lifetime of coal-fired plants is extremely important.
Podkrepa President Dimitar Manolov stated that Bulgaria must declare that it is not ready to meet the commitments made under the Energy section of the RRP to the European Commission.
