Three areas within Bulgaria’s Black Sea territories have been declared protected by order of the caretaker Environment and Water Minister, the Ministry said in a press release. The placement of the Aladzha Banka, Emona, and Otmanli areas under protection aims to preserve the local species’ populations and habitats.

The Aladzha Banka area (6.6964 sq km) is known for its reefs and sandy and muddy shallows that are constantly covered by sea water, as well as for the habitats of the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncates), the Pontic shad (Alosa immaculata), and the Black Sea shad (Alosa tanaica).

The Emona area (553.4528 sq km) includes reefs and habitats of the harbour porpoise, the common bottlenose dolphin, the Pontic shad, and the Black Sea shad.

The Otmanli area (0.0883 sq km) has sandy and muddy shallows that are constantly underwater and provides habitats for the harbour porpoise, the common bottlenose dolphin, and the Pontic shad.
