site.btaRegional Development Minister: Unlawful Constructions Total BGN 1.02 Bln

The cost of unlawful constructions totals BGN 1.02 billion, Regional Development Minister Ivan Shishkov told a news conference on Monday. Those constructions include Lots 4 and 5 of the Hemus Motorway, ongoing road repair and maintenance works carried out as major repairs, and dam repairs.

Unlawful construction and assembly works done on 16.5 km of Lot 4 and 8.4 km of Lot 5 of the Hemus Motorway cost BGN 212.1 million, paid in advance, Shishkov said.

Unlawful construction and assembly works were done on 95 sections (287.8 km) of the national road network, which cost BGN 733.5 million.

Unlawful repairs worth BGN 75 million were done on 42 out of 71 inspected dams.

Shishkov said this is just part of the unlawful construction, and recalled that the Council of Ministers had proposed that the Spatial Development Act be amended to introduce inspections of unlawful constructions which will find out if they meet the standards so as to be granted tolerable construction status.  

Former regional development minister Violeta Komitova said that if introduced, tolerable construction status would make it possible for unlawful constructions to be used and become profitable.
