In 2021, total environmental tax revenue in the EU amounted to EUR 325.8 billion, representing 2.2 % of European Union GDP and 5.4 % of total EU government revenue from taxes and social contributions, show Eurostat data published on Monday. In Bulgaria, environmental tax revenue accounted for 9.1% of revenue from taxes and social contributions, placing the country second in the EU. 

Greece had the biggest share of environmental tax revenue, 9.5%, while Luxembourg had the lowest, 3.5%.

In 2020, total environmental tax revenue in the EU amounted to EUR 300.2 billion, representing 5.4 % of European Union government revenue from taxes and social contributions. In the pre-pandemic 2019, that share stood at 5.7%.
