According to the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), 596,688,730 banknotes worth close to BGN 27 billion were in circulation in Bulgaria at the end of December 2022.

The number of banknotes increased by 2.82% on a quarterly basis and by 4.84% on a yearly basis. The largest number of banknotes in circulation were again those with a denomination of BGN 50 - 236,637,722 pieces, followed by banknotes of BGN 20 - 124,033,555. Those with a denomination of BGN 100 were 114,542,396 pieces.

At the end of 2022, the value of banknotes in circulation was BGN 26,826,372,935, with a quarterly growth of 3.3% and a yearly growth of 11.14%. 

BNB statistics show that 160,559,571 banknotes were in circulation at the end of 1999. Back then, the banknote with the largest denomination was that of BGN 50 (20,074,488 pieces in circulation). At the end of 1999, the most circulated banknotes were of BGN 1 (37,223,418 pieces). They have not been in circulation since the beginning of 2016 but continue to be exchanged at the BNB cash desks. The BGN 100 banknote has been in circulation since 8 December 2003.

The value of banknotes in circulation was BGN 2,002,694,095 at the end of 1999, meaning that, since then, the value of banknotes has increased by 1,339.51%.
