The European Commission approved the entry of the name Troyanska lukanka in the register of foodstuffs of traditional speciality guaranteed (TSG), the commission said on Wednesday. Products entered in the TSG list are protected from counterfeiting and misuse.
The traditional production method of this type of salami involves drying and smoking, which makes the product unique to Bulgaria. The name Troyanska derives from the town of Troyan, North Central Bulgaria, where the lukanka was first produced and popularized by Ilia Taslakov. In 1883, he imported the first meat grinding machines to Bulgaria, making him one of the country's first lukanka producers.
Troyanska lukanka will be only the 70th name added to the TSG list.
