A sod-turning ceremony near the town of Slivnitsa on Friday launched the construction of the railway section from Petarch to Dragoman and the construction of the signalling and telecommunication systems of the section Volujak - Dragoman.

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister for EU Funds Management Atanas Pekanov, Deputy Transport and Communications Minister Krassimir Papukchiiski, Regional Governor of Sofia Region Radoslav Stoychev and Director General of the National Railway Infrastructure Company Zlatin Krumov.

"We are launching an important project because the issue of rail transport should be a priority for all Bulgarian governments. I am glad that the project will be financed with European funds. It is important that the results of all projects implemented with European funds are visible and reach the people," Pekanov said.

He stressed that all developed countries focus on rail transport, which Bulgaria should do as well, as this mode of transport is convenient and environmentally friendly.

The construction of railway track, overhead contact network and facilities on the railway section Petarch - Dragoman, and the design, construction and author's supervision of signalling and telecommunication systems on the section Volujak - Dragoman are part of a project for modernization of the railway line Sofia - Dragoman - Serbian border, section Volujak - Dragoman, which is implemented with co-financing from the Cohesion Fund through the Operational Programme on Transport and Transport Infrastructure 2014-2020.
