EC Suspends Infringement Procedure against Bulgaria Related to Ambient Air Pollution
Sofia, July 17 (BTA) - The European Commission has decided to
suspend the infringement procedure against Bulgaria related to
failure to meet obligations in abidance by national limits for
air pollutants from large combustion installations as set down
in the Treaties for Accession to the EC, the Ministry of
Environment and Water said Friday.
According to the Treaties, Bulgaria is obligated to abide by a
total value of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and dust from
all large combustion installations.
Efforts of the country between 2007 and 2013 have reduced the
emissions several times; six-fold for sulphur dioxide, twofold
for nitrogen oxide and approximately fivefold for dust.
Additional options to reduce emissions were sought in order to
reduce national ambient air pollutant levels, the press release
said, including investment in desulphurization plants.
