Bulgaria's First Constitution, Russo-Turkish War Relics
Exhibited at
Presidency on the
Occasion of National Day

Sofia, March 2 (BTA) - Thousands have visited the exhibition of
war relicts from the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878) and
Bulgaria's first constitution, known as the Turnovo
Constitution, staged at the Presidency on Monday, said the
President's Press Secretariat.

The exhibition is organized by the President's Administration,
the National Military History Museum, the Archives State Agency
and the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library on the
occasion of Bulgaria's National Day - March 3 - when this
country celebrates its liberation from Ottoman rule.

The exhibition features the Constitution of the Principality of
Bulgaria, which was adopted by the Constituent National Assembly
in Turnovo (today's central city of Veliko Turnovo) on April
16, 1879 and later known as the Turnovo Constitution.

Among the exhibits are personal belongings and the military
uniform of modern Bulgaria's first Prince (Knyaz) Alexander of
Battenberg, his personal diary, as well as authentic weapons
from that time, state and military medals and orders for the
participants in the Russo-Turkish war, also known in Bulgaria as
the Liberation War.

Visitors were able to also see a rich collection of documents,
revealing the historical new beginning of Bulgarian statehood
after almost five centuries of Ottoman rule. There is also a
copy of the Peace Treaty of San Stefano, signed between Russia
and the Ottoman Empire on March 3, 1878, which established the
autonomous Principality of Bulgaria. //MY
