Bulgaria Celebrates National Day


Sofia, March 3 (BTA) - On March 3, Bulgaria celebrates its National Day and marks the 137th anniversary of its Liberation from Ottoman rule. 137 years ago today, the Treaty of San Stefano was signed to end the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation.

Celebrations are held across the country. In Sofia, the national flag was raised at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier in the presence of President Rosen Plevneliev, the Parliament leader, government officials, other state representatives and members of the public. A memorial service was held for the heroes of the Liberation at the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. In the evening, a traditional tattoo will take place in the cente of the capital. The President will review the guard of honour and deliver an address.

Later in the evening, the Central Military Club will host the traditional presidential reception on the occasion of the National Day.

Some 10,000 Bulgarians from all parts of the country climbed the historical Shipka Peak in the Central Balkan Range to attend various observances. Shipka was the location of one of the most decisive and fierce battles fought in the Russo-Turkish War in 1877.
