Banks Will Fast Track Account Opening for Ukrainian Nationals

A mechanism is in the works which will fast track the opening of bank accounts for Ukrainian citizens who have applied for temporary protection in Bulgaria under EU’s Temporary Protections Directive. This transpired at a meeting of Deputy Prime Ministers Assen Vassilev and Kalina Konstantinova and members of the Association of Banks in Bulgaria and of the Bulgarian National Bank at the Finance Ministry on Monday.

Also at issue was the possibility for card cash withdrawal and payments by Ukrainians in Bulgaria. According to the banks, currently Ukrainians are able to make withdrawals in Bulgarian currency from their debit and credit cards Visa and Mastercard. The amounts are within the cash withdrawal limits set by the respective Ukranian banks and within the bank’s guarantee limit. Also Ukrainians can pay for goods and services in Bulgaria through POS.

Currently EU countries are not buying Ukrainian currency and a decision by the European Central Bank is expected that will apply to the whole of the EU. PP
