Protein production from insect larvae is innovative and environmentally friendly and Bulgaria has a chance to be among the leaders in the world in this venture, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment and Water Borislav Sandov from the parliamentary rostrum in answer to a question by by GERB-UDF MP Evgenia Aleksieva.
Sandov explained that this type of protein production is part of the EU's priority development programme as one of the most environmentally friendly methods for animal protein production. Each tonne of such protein "saves" five tonnes of ocean fish, the Deputy Prime minister argued. The protein is approved for use on livestock farms and it is a product of strategic importance, he added.
If Bulgaria wants to develop in terms of environmental innovation, it needs such technologies, Sandov stressed.
