Bulgarian President Rumen Radev held a meeting with Israeli writer and politician Michael Bar-Zohar here on Wednesday, Radev’s press secretariat said. Bar-Zohar is the author of a number of biographical and historical studies.

Commenting on the rescue of Bulgarian Jews from concentration camps in 1943, which was the topic of discussion, Radev said that in the darkest hour in European history, the Second World War, a small nation rescued its Jewish community giving a lesson in humanism to the whole world.

The two sides concurred that the feat of the Bulgarian people, Head of state Tsar Boris the Third, Bulgarian Parliament and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, deserves its worthy place in mankind’s historical memory. In 2023, Bulgaria will mark the 80th anniversary of the rescue of Bulgarian Jews in World War Two. On that occasion, Bar-Zohar proposed that next year the European Parliament mark a Day of Bulgaria.
