Manfred Weber, chairman of the Group of the European People's Party in the European Parliament, on Wednesday demanded an investigation into the detention of GERB leader Boyko Borissov last week.

He said Borissov had been "abducted", according to the English translation of his speech in German.

In recent years, the European Parliament has been united in the fight for the rule of law. Last week, we saw the leader of the opposition abducted for several days. There was no court decision, only a decision of a politician, the Interior Minister. Today in Sofia, a court ruled that these actions do not meet rule of law standards. Therefore, there may be a violation of the rule of law mechanism, Weber said.

He called on EP services to look into the case.

The EPP supports the fight against corruption, but this fight must be based on the principles of the rule of law. A violation was committed in Bulgaria and this must be investigated, according to Weber.
