Supporters of the nationalist Vazrazhdane party gathered in front of Parliament here on Wednesday and staged an anti-government protest. The party demands that Bulgaria maintains neutrality regarding the military conflict in Ukraine.

Crowd control barriers were placed around the National Assembly’s building, where police presence was also heavy.

According to Vazrazhdane, Bulgaria has no place in the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine and must act as a peacemaker and a bridge between the two peoples, but unfortunately, the Bulgarian Government does not see things this way. The party also believes that Bulgaria must not provide military equipment and weapons to Ukraine. Vazrazhdane is against the deployment of NATO equipment and troops on Bulgarian territory. The protesters also changed “NATO Out!”

Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov told his party’s supporters that they are the only thing preventing Parliament from voting yet another act of treason – the submitted draft resolution for providing military aid to Ukraine. “It was supposed to be submitted and voted today, but they [the incumbents] got scared,” he said.

The protesters carried signs reading “Neutrality. Peace in Bulgaria and in the World”, “No to War”, “Down with Kiril Petkov”, and chanted “Resignation!”, urging Prime Minister Kiril Petkov’s Cabinet to resign.
