Prime Minister Kiril Petkov talked with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz by telephone, the Bulgarian Government Information Service reported on Friday.

The two leaders discussed the war in Ukraine. Petkov briefed Scholz on the assistance which Bulgaria can provide to Ukraine in terms of repairing military equipment. He noted that the Bulgarian Black Sea port of Varna can become a logistical wheat hub. The Prime Minister underscored the importance of the precautions which Europe can take against a possible food crisis due to the war.

Another highlight of the discussion was Europe's energy security, including measures being taken by the EU member states to ensure natural gas supplies.

Furthermore, Petkov and Scholz looked at the European integration of the Western Balkans and the process of cooperation with North Macedonia.
