United Nations agencies, ministries and nongovernmental organizations join efforts to acquaint Ukrainians with the rules for enrolling their children in the Bulgarian education system, UNICEF Bulgaria said Wednesday. The Back to School in Bulgaria information campaign aims to support the efforts of the Education and Science Ministry and the Health Ministry to provide refugee children with access to education and healthcare.
According to the national authorities’ data, there are over 39,000 children from Ukraine in Bulgaria. Some of them continue to study online in the Ukrainian education system, which deprives them of the opportunity to socialize with peers in Bulgaria and to benefit from additional support, language learning, participation in extracurricular activities and others which the Bulgarian school can offer them. Education Ministry data show that just some 530 children from Ukraine are enrolled in the Bulgarian education system.
The information campaign is expected to reach (online and offline) some 10,000 people. Starting a month before the beginning of the new school year, the campaign will help the Ukrainian families acquaint themselves with all benefits and specifics of the Bulgarian education system and inform them of the steps they should take to enroll their children in a Bulgarian school.
The campaign is organized by UNICEF and the The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in partnership with the Foundation for Access to Rights, Astra Forum Foundation, Bulgarian Red Cross, and The For GOOD Foundation.
