The city and the region of Plovdiv provide the best conditions for Ukrainian refugees, Ukrainian Ambassador to Bulgaria Vitaly Moskalenko said at a meeting with Regional Governor Angel Stoev on Tuesday. "Ukrainians are very well received and enjoy warm treatment and assistance in Plovdiv," the diplomat said.
He presented to Stoev a certificate of thanks for the support, solidarity and care for the Ukrainian citizens affected by the war. The conversation between the two officials revolved around refugee care and assistance.
The Regional Governor commented: "From the very first day of the crisis, we have been very organized and active in receiving people fleeing the war. All necessary conditions have been created for living, working, healthcare and training." He gave Ambassador Moskalenko the Plovdiv Region Badge of Honour acknowledging the longstanding friendly relations between the two countries.
The Ambassador presented similar "thank you" certificates to Plovdiv Mayor Zdravko Dimitrov, his deputies Stefan Stoyanov and Georgi Tityukov, and Social Services Director Veselina Boteva.
"I want to thank Plovdiv Municipality for working from the very first day of the war together with our Honorary Consulate in Plovdiv to extend full cooperation in providing accommodation, food and medical care to the refugees from Ukraine," Moskalenko said. He expressed appreciation for the local administration's efforts to introduce Ukrainian kids to the education system and help them learn Bulgarian.
Plovdiv has a temporary refugee accommodation centre housed in a former pulmonary disease hospital. The municipal administration has also provided rooms for two daycare centres for child refugees. More than 400 of these kids now attend kindergartens and schools in Bulgaria's second-largest city.
