Bulgaria and Greece register the lowest support for EU decisions related to the war in Ukraine, according to a survey conducted by Eurobarometer and published by the European Parliament (EP) on Wednesday. In both countries, 48% of the respondents expressed a total approval for the EU's support for Ukraine, compared to an EU citizens' average approval rate of 74%.
In 24 EU Member States, the majority of citizens approve this support. Approval rates are the highest in Sweden with 97%, Finland with 95%, the Netherlands with 93%, Portugal and Denmark both with 92%.
Nearly three quarters of EU citizens, or 73% approve of the EU's specific actions to support Ukraine, including sanctions against the Russian government. That rate in Bulgaria is 49%.
Asked which values the EP should defend as a matter of priority, 36% said democracy, 29% said the protection of human rights, and 28% said freedom of speech and thought. The most common answers given by Bulgarians were the protection of the rule of law and the freedom of movement within the EU.
When thinking about the war in Ukraine and its potential consequences, close to two-thirds of EU citizens, or 65%, are not confident that their lives will continue unchanged. This is an increase of 4 percentage points compared to April/May of this year. Citizens see value in being part of the EU, with 72% of Europeans and 60% of Bulgarians saying that their country has benefited from being a Member State.
