BTA’s Daily News editor Konstantin Karagyozov will set sail on the first Bulgarian military research/survey vessel (RSV) Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii from Varna to Antarctica on December 27.
He will join the 31st Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition on Livingston Island and will be reporting from aboard the ship and from the St. Kliment Ohridski Bulgarian Antarctic Base. His reports will feature on BTA's website in a section entitled "Bulgaria - Antarctica: BTA's Log". The voyage is expected to last four months, and the vessel will take 40 days to reach Livingston Island. The crew of around 30 will pass through the territorial waters Turkiye, Greece, Spain and Argentina during the journey.
Konstantin was selected for this mission from a pool of candidates as an avid outdoorsman, a landscape photographer and an experienced journalist. He is a keen hiker, camper and mountain climber, and is also passionate about football and tennis. BTA's Antarctica correspondent has completed the Kom-Emine high-mountain trail at just 17 years old, completing the 700-km long journey through the Balkan Mountains on foot in just 19 days.
Konstantin sees the upcoming adventure as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
"I am very happy about the opportunity to be BTA's correspondent during the 31st Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition. I am proud to participate in this historic journey for Bulgaria and hope that everything will be fine and that we'll manage with the challenges that lie ahead," Konstantin says.
He cannot yet anticipate what to expect from this adventure, but says this gives him strength. "We'll have to endure the journey to Livingston Island physically, but most of all mentally. I hope we all stay healthy and leave our mark on Bulgarian research and exploration," he says.
Konstantin's connection with the sea dates to his birth, as he was born in 1993 in the coastal city of Burgas. He then moved to Sofia to enroll in the First English Language School. After graduating from high school, he moved to the UK for three years to study sports journalism at the University of Brighton, after which he continued his studies in journalism at Sofia University. Konstantin has been part of BTA's Daily News team since September of 2021. Despite his young age, his journalistic experience spans almost a decade.
After the long journey at sea ahead, another more important mission will be waiting for him at home – starting a family with his fiancée Dilyana, to whom BTA is especially grateful for encouraging Konstantin to pursue his adventure-seeking passion and go on this mission.
