site.btaInvestigative Journalist Supposes Russia Wants Him for Spotting Secret Group Homing Missiles against Ukraine
Bulgarian investigative journalist Christo Grozev, who is wanted by Russia, believes that the reason for this is a disclosure of a secret group homing the Russian missiles fired during the war against Ukraine.
In an exclusive interview for bTV on Friday evening, Grozev said that the most recent investigation of his www.bellingcat.com investigative site identified a secret group of 33 young men that programmed the targets in Kyiv for Russian cruise missiles. The group were sanctioned by the EU last week, he pointed out.
The Russian authorities have not said what violations prompted the Bulgarian's inclusion in their wanted list and have referred only to an unspecified article in the Criminal Code. On Thursday, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry told BTA that they will send a letter to the Russian Interior Ministry and ask for more information about the case concerning Grozev. He told bTV that he assumes he has been charged with violating a law on disinformation during wartime that Russia adopted earlier this year.
The journalist thanked the Bulgarian Government for summoning Russian Ambassador in Sofia Eleonora Mitrofanova and for the "tough tone" he hopes the Foreign Ministry used during that meeting. "I keep in touch with the Bulgarian law enforcement authorities because there are investigations that we have initiated," Grozev added.
He said that he was ready to come back to Bulgaria and attend a parliamentary committee hearing on the influence of the Russian services.
