Russian singer-songwriter and founder of the Aquarium band Boris Grebenshchikov is coming to Bulgaria for the first time, with two concerts scheduled for January 27 and 28 at the Toplotsentrala Regional Centre for Contemporary Art, the organizers said.
About to turn 70 and with half a century onstage, Grebenshchikov has recorded over 50 albums and is widely considered one of the “founding fathers” of Russian rock music. Born in 1953, in 1972 he founded the band Aquarium with his childhood friend Anatoly "George" Gonitsky as a postmodern theatrical endeavor that included poetry and music. As at the time western rock music was still officially banned, the band gradually acquired more underground listeners, only to end up with 11 official records in 1991.
Grebenshchikov's lyrics are often eclectic, for he is also known as a student of religion and mysticism. According to critics, at his concerts Perestroika-time hits alternate with reggae, new wave, alternative rock, electronica, punk, world music, jazz, classical, and avant-garde pieces all keeping the audience on their toes.
Grebenshchikov and his band live in London. They give concerts only outside Russia and part of the receipts are used to help victims of the war in Ukraine.
