The Bulgarian MEPs from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), Ilhan Kyuchyuk, Iskra Mihaylova and Atidzhe Alieva-Veli, have urged the European Commission to consider an EU regulatory framework to prevent the financing of political parties by dubious crypto companies, the MRF said on Thursday.
The MRF delegation stressed the growing interest in using cryptocurrencies for donations to political entities. Crypto companies are being increasingly involved in political campaigns, the MEPs said.
Referring to an investigation in Bulgaria into the cryptocurrency trading platform Nexo as part of an international operation, the MEPs expressed doubts that the law is being circumvented when company employees or managers make personal donations to a political party. They referred to the Bulgarian investigation in which four persons have been charged with participating in a criminal group for the purpose of money laundering, tax crimes, computer fraud and unlicensed banking.
The MEPs asked how the Commission is going to defend European democracy when representatives of political entities who get funding from criminal organizations are elected to leadership positions, including in the European Parliament.
