Austrian Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer will pay a working visit to Bulgaria on January 23 at the invitation of President Rumen Radev, the Bulgarian head of State’s press secretariat said Friday. Radev will welcome the guest at Plovdiv Airport, from where the two will go get acquainted on site with the security measures at the EU’s external border with Turkiye.

Radev and Nehammer will visit the Border Police Regional Directorate in Elhovo (Southeastern Bulgaria), where the Regional Coordination Centre is located. The Centre is part of the Integrated Monitoring System of the Bulgarian-Turkish border.

The Austrian Chancellor’s visit will be focused on Bulgarian border security and countering the migration pressure, as well as the application of EU law regarding the Schengen area. On the Austrian delegation is Federal Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner.

Back in early December 2022, Austria opposed the entry of Bulgaria and Romania in Schengen.

Radev and Nehammer will have a working meeting, followed by a joint news briefing. On the Bulgarian delegation for the visit to the Bulgarian-Turkish border will be caretaker Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov, and the Chief of Defence, Admiral Emil Eftimov.

The Austrian Federal Chancellor is also scheduled to meet with caretaker Prime Minister Galab Donev.
