President Rumen Radev believes that the Nexo scandal could potentially influence Bulgarian politics and even hinder the formation of the country's next regular government.

Interviewed by Darik Radio on Saturday, Radev said that, as a rule, the third and last government-forming mandate is doomed if the large parliamentary forces are unable or reluctant to put together a government on the first two mandates. That is why the third mandate, which the President granted to the BSP for Bulgaria parliamentary group, was unsuccessful.

Radev gave his reasons to choose this parliamentary group over Democratic Bulgaria. He said Democratic Bulgaria had insisted that GERB and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms should be "quarantined" for many years and had upheld the motto "Never GERB!", but when GERB recently suggested that they and Democratic Bulgaria could form a government, the latter's leadership kept silent rather than saying "No". Their hesitation indicated that a large part of the electorate of Democratic Bulgaria may withdraw their support from the party in future elections if their government-forming attempt fails, the President said.

"The next caretaker prime minister will be the old caretaker prime minister, Galab Donev. Not for a second have I considered other options," President Rumen Radev said, following the failure to fulfil the third exploratory mandate to form a government, handed to BSP.

"There is no model Radev, we have a Constitution. It is very clearly written there that when the parties cannot form a government, the President is obliged to appoint one," Radev said.

Trying to avoid the responsibility to govern in times of crisis, the parties hide behind the caretaker government, according to the head of State.

"Bulgaria has achieved what no other country has managed to achieve - full diversification of natural gas supplies. Did anyone imagine that Bulgaria would be able to do what no country, nor the European Commission have not been able to do - to achieve diversification in a way that definitively solves our gas problems for decades to come. We have a contract for 1 bcm from Azerbaijan, the capacity for the Alexandroupolis terminal has doubled and we have signed an agreement with Turkiye," Radev pointed out.

Commenting on the war in Ukraine, President Radev said that giving arms to Ukraine means putting out the fire with gasoline, accepting that there will be many more casualties, accepting the position that there can be a military victory, that there must be a war to the complete collapse of one side, which inevitably and gradually pushes us towards a global conflict with the possibility of nuclear self-destruction. He reiterated his position that Bulgaria should not send weapons to this conflict. "Those who think otherwise should not only know well the deep political and historical roots of this conflict, but they should present what analysis they have done about the risks and consequences of such an act," the President said.
