The Road Safety Institute (RSI) is launching a national citizen initiative called "Mission Safe Roads", RSI chairman Bogdan Milchev told BTA.

Its aim is to register and gather enough public support to force the next government to adopt a new road traffic law and a new road management structure, Milchev explained.

The RSI is proposing a merger of the State Agency Road Safety, the Road Infrastructure Agency and the Executive Agency Road Transport Administration. These three agencies could be merged into a state agency Transport Administration, Milchev said. According to him, this would concentrate power in one place and have one goal - road safety. "It is the road that can prevent drivers from dying because drivers will always make mistakes," he said.

Milchev pointed out that the traffic law should have a different philosophy. "The current philosophy of the law is that everything is the driver's fault," says Bogdan Milchev. The RSI proposes that the responsibility should start with the transport system provider, i.e. the state institutions which create the rules of this system.
