site.bta2023 Tax Campaign Kicks Off in Sofia

The 2023 tax collection campaign is starting. Local taxes and fees in Sofia can be paid online as of Sunday, and as of Monday, January 23, at the cash desk in the district tax departments, by bank transfer or through financial intermediaries, the Sofia Municipality told BTA.

The deadline for availing of the 5% discount on property tax and motor vehicle tax is April 30, provided the entire amount due is paid in one lump sum. By the end of April this year is also the deadline for the first payment of the municipal waste tax, the Municipal Revenue directorate of the Sofia Municipality reminds.

As of January 6, the motor vehicle tax for 2023 can be paid in Sofia, with BGN 1.5 million paid by 11,500 taxpayers in the first week of the campaign alone. Throughout 2022, the total amount of motor vehicle tax paid into the budget was BGN 112.1 million, of which BGN 65 million came from individuals. BGN 122.7 million was paid into Sofia's coffers last year as real estate tax. Of these funds, BGN 61.5 million were paid by individuals - property owners.

When paying local taxes and fees in instalments, the deadlines within which this must be done without interest for delay are: June 30 for first instalments of real estate tax and motor vehicle tax, and October 31 for second instalments. For household waste tax in four instalments: April 30, June 30, September 30 and November 30. The rates for local taxes and charges have not changed and are the same as in the past few years. The most convenient way to pay the local taxes and fees is through the portal of the Sofia Municipality: https://szp.sofia.bg/OnlineReportWSClient/pages/login.jsf. 

The printing of the tax notices will start in the second half of February, the Municipal Revenue directorate said. They will be sent out from the end of February to those owners who prefer to receive paper notices instead of electronic ones.
