The Constitutional Court has initiated a case on a request by the Council of Ministers for a mandatory interpretation of provisions of the Constitution to decide whether the introduction of compulsory military training of reservists is permissible, the court said on its website on Wednesday.
The Council of Ministers is asking whether the constitutional provision allows for the introduction of compulsory peacetime training of reservists without it leading to the reintroduction of compulsory military service for Bulgarian citizens in the form that existed before January 1, 2008.
The current legal framework provides for voluntary training of Bulgarian citizens for the defence of the homeland.
