site.btaBulgaria Proposes Mutual EU Fund in Support of Refugees from Ukraine

Bulgaria has taken the lead in discussing European support for refugees from Ukraine, proposing a common mutual fund, Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said after the end of the informal European Council in Versailles, quoted by the press service of the Council of Ministers.

Petkov pointed out that Bulgaria has received approval from the leaders in the Council for its proposal for European solidarity, as well as from EC President Ursula von der Leyen. The EC will propose different options to cover the costs that the member states now pay for themselves. Prime Minister Petkov pointed out the Bulgarian model as a possible basis for the elaboration of the European policy on the subject.

Regarding the economic situation, Prime Minister Petkov said that sunflower oil and gas prices are spiking, and economic growth is declining. In this situation, it is essential for European governments to stimulate their economies so that there is a fiscal policy conducive to investment.

''Our budget covers exactly these frameworks - we have a budget deficit, but it is an investment deficit and supports the Bulgarian economy,'' said the Prime Minister.

He also said that a regular meeting of the European Council will be held soon and will further address the issue.

''These crises can be fought when we work together,'' said Kiril Petkov.
