"We have agreed on having two shiploads of liquefied natural gas from the US in June at a price slightly below the Gazprom level," Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov told journalists on Wednesday evening, back home from a visit to the US which he described as "fruitful".
He did not specify the price agreed but insisted that it would be far below the current market levels.
It was reported earlier in the day that when they conferred in Washington, D.C., Petkov and US Vice President Kamala Harris had reached agreement on LNG supplies for Bulgaria.
Negotiations on a long-term contract are in progress. "The price margin will probably be narrower for the two ships, but I hope that it will be a double-digit percentage in the long-term contract," Petkov pointed out, adding that the entire quantity will be far cheaper and that the quantities had been agreed specifically for Bulgaria, "which shows our partners' support."
"It is important to say that the contract will be concluded directly between the US company and Bulgaria, without intermediaries," the PM stressed. The gas will reach Bulgaria's gas transmission system probably from Greece or Turkey.
He said it was important that Bulgaria should have the lowest prices, that Bulgarian business should be competitive, that gas supplies should be diversified and the country should be sure that supplies will not be discontinued unilaterally.
"We continue to wait for the quantity of gas from Azerbaijan and, apart from that, we are holding discussions with other countries, too. We're not at all replacing one supplier by another but are choosing the lowest prices from among all suppliers," Petkov said.
"Everybody are aware that when Gazprom cuts off supplies, all possible options should be used so that Bulgarians could rest assured and know that the Bulgarian Government is working for them," the PM pointed out.
