The first group of Ukrainian refugees from a buffer centre in Elhovo, Southern Bulgaria, will be transported to a former children’s camp in the northeastern village of Yastrebino. Lists are already being made, said State Agency for Refugees Chair Mariana Tosheva who is at the centre.
Tosheva said that mothers with small children, ill and retired people will be relocated first. Some 90 people will be transported to the former camp. Tosheva said that it is important for the people themselves to be active as they know best what their needs are.
On Tuesday, nearly 600 Ukrainian refugees were accommodated at the refugee centre in Elhovo from hotels on the Black Sea coast. The centre has 221 trailers and 1,768 beds. Another 500 Ukrainian refugees are expected to arrive there on Wednesday.
The Bulgarian government set up a programme for accommodating displaced people from Ukraine at state-owned holiday facilities in the mountain resorts after May 31 in a bid to help hotels that took in refugees to go back to their usual business in the summer.
However, Ukrainian refugees have sabotaged the government's efforts to relocate them.
On Monday Deputy Prime Minister for Good Governance Kalina Konstantinova said that the government will abandon its plan to have Ukrainians resettled inside this country and that they will be sheltered instead in temporary centres in Sarafovo, on the Black Sea, and in the town of Elhovo, Southeastern Bulgaria.
